High pH Therapy: The Science, Benefits, and Applications for Health and Wellness
In recent years, the concept of high pH therapy has gained significant attention within the health and wellness community. This approach, which centers on the use of alkalizing substances or practices to promote a more alkaline body environment, is gaining popularity due to its purported health benefits. But what exactly is high pH therapy, and how can it contribute to your overall well-being? In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the science behind high pH therapy, its benefits, and how you can incorporate it into your lifestyle.
What is High pH Therapy?
High pH therapy refers to practices, substances, or treatments aimed at increasing the pH level of the body, tissues, or fluids to a more alkaline state. pH, or “potential hydrogen,” is a scale used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. The scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity, while values above 7 indicate alkalinity.
In the context of health, most biological systems, such as blood, thrive within a narrow pH range. The blood’s ideal pH is slightly alkaline, around 7.4. When the body becomes too acidic (a condition known as acidosis), it can lead to various health issues such as fatigue, chronic inflammation, and an increased risk of chronic diseases.
High pH therapy focuses on neutralizing excess acidity in the body by encouraging practices and dietary habits that promote an alkaline environment.
The Science Behind High pH Therapy
Our bodies naturally regulate pH levels to maintain homeostasis, with different systems (such as the kidneys and lungs) playing key roles in maintaining acid-base balance. However, modern diets rich in processed foods, refined sugars, and animal proteins can contribute to acidity in the body, leading to a potential state of imbalance.
Proponents of high pH therapy argue that when the body becomes too acidic, it may struggle to maintain optimal health. By increasing alkalinity, it is believed that the body can function more efficiently, resulting in numerous health benefits.
Though the body works hard to regulate pH levels, the diet and lifestyle can still have a substantial effect. Foods like fruits, vegetables, and certain supplements are thought to help the body shift toward an alkaline state.

Otto Heinrich Warburg
In 1931 Otto Heinrich Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his “discovery of the nature and mode of action of the respiratory enzyme”. In 1944, Warburg was nominated a second time for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the mechanism and enzymes involved in fermentation. Warburg articulated his hypothesis in a paper entitled The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer. Warburg presented evidence in support of the claim that anaerobiosis was a primary cause of cancerous cells. Put in his own words, “the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar.
Warburg on Wikipedia
Warburg investigated the metabolism of tumors and the respiration of cells, particularly cancer cells, and in 1931 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his “discovery of the nature and mode of action of the respiratory enzyme.” The award came after receiving 46 nominations over a period of nine years beginning in 1923, 13 of which were submitted in 1931, the year he won the prize.

The Warburg Hypothesis
The Warburg Theory of Cancer or “Warburg hypothesis” (as distinguished from the Warburg effect) postulates that the driver of tumorigenesis is an insufficient cellular respiration caused by insult to mitochondria. The Warburg Effect describes the observation that cancer cells, and many cells grown in-vitro, exhibit glucose fermentation even when enough oxygen is present to properly respire. In other words, instead of fully respiring in the presence of adequate oxygen, cancer cells ferment. The current popular opinion is that cancer cells ferment glucose while keeping up the same level of respiration that was present before the process of carcinogenesis, and thus the Warburg Effect would be defined as the observation that cancer cells exhibit glycolysis with lactate secretion and mitochondrial respiration even in the presence of oxygen.

The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer
On June 30th 1966 Otto Warburg gave a lecture at the meeting of the Nobel-Laureates on June 30, 1966 at Lindau, Lake Constance, Germany. He was quoted as saying:
Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes. From the standpoint of the physics and chemistry of life this difference between normal and cancer cells is so great that one can scarcely picture a greater difference. Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by an energy yielding reaction of the lowest living forms, namely, a fermentation of glucose.
Cancer and Oxygen
The discovery for which the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine is to be awarded today concerns intracellular combustion: that fundamental vital process by which substances directly supplied to cells or stored in them are broken down into simpler components while using up oxygen. It is by this process that the energy required for other vital processes is made available to the cells in a form capable of immediate utilization.
Aubrey Keith Brewer, Ph.D
The development of his theory of high pH cancer therapy with cesium chloride grew out of his understanding of the physics of the cell membrane. In his paper The High pH Therapy for Cancer Tests on Mice and Humans, he stated “mass spectrographic and isotope studies have shown that potassium, rubidium, and especially cesium are most efficiently taken up by cancer cells. Based on the ready uptake of cesium and rubidium (which cannot carry glucose across the membrane) by the cancer cells, Dr. Brewer devised a therapy aimed at depriving the cell of glucose and supporting the system with antioxidants and other nutrients. The quantity of cesium taken up was sufficient to raise the cell to the 8 pH range. Where cell mitosis ceases and the life of the cell is short.”

Reflections on the Unexplored Work of a Perceptive Researcher
Dr. Keith Brewer, a physicist, served for some time in his research career as Chief of the Mass Spectrometer and Isotope section of the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD). Among the studies he conducted beginning in the early 1930s, the examination of the ratio of potassium isotopes 39K/41K in a wide range of living and nonliving materials proved most fruitful, particularly in the study of cancer initiation.

Nutrients and Cancer: An Introduction to Cesium Therapy and Cesium Therapy in Cancer Patients (PDF file)
A brief overview on the relevance of dietary factors in both development and prevention of cancer is presented. The pharmacologic properties of various food ingredients are discussed. Establishing of a special diet for the cancer patient is suggested. In addition, avoidance of certain foods is recommended to counteract mucus production of cancer cells. Evaluation of the nutrient content of certain diets in regions with low incidence of cancer has advanced the use of certain alkali metals, i.e., rubidium and cesium, as chemotherapeutic agents. The rationale for this approach, termed the ” high pH therapy “, resides in changing the acidic pH range of the cancer cell by cesium (or rubidium) towards weak alkalinity in which the survival of the cancer cell is endangered, and the formation of acidic and toxic materials, normally formed in cancer cells, is neutralized and eliminated.

Proposed Common Cause and Cure for All Forms of Cancer
Cancer does not cause cells to turn anaerobic, but rather it is stabilized anaerobic metabolism that is the single cause that turns the normal cells that depend on aerobic metabolism into cancer cells. The proposed cure, as an alternative to protocols that focus on killing the cancer cells, is to restart aerobic metabolism, which allows the cells to revert back to being quasi-normal cells again. Genetic damage is not corrected, but if the cells are held in a normal state of aerobic metabolism, with time they will go through the normal process of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and the cancer cells are permanently eliminated. For the proposed cure, the task is to walk through each step of aerobic metabolism, identify the nutrient that stimulates/assists it, and combine them all in a dietary/treatment protocol.
Key Components of High pH Therapy
There are a variety of ways to implement high pH therapy into your routine. Here are some of the most common methods:
1. Alkaline Water
One of the most popular ways to embrace high pH therapy is by drinking alkaline water. This water has a higher pH than regular tap water, typically ranging from 8 to 9 on the pH scale. Alkaline water is often touted for its potential to neutralize acid in the bloodstream, improve hydration, and even enhance detoxification. Some people believe that drinking alkaline water regularly can support digestion, boost energy levels, and promote overall health.
2. Alkaline Diet
An alkaline diet focuses on consuming foods that are thought to have an alkalizing effect on the body. These foods are typically rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which help neutralize acids. Common alkaline foods include:
- Fruits: Avocados, lemons, watermelon, and berries
- Vegetables: Leafy greens, cucumbers, bell peppers, and broccoli
- Nuts and seeds: Almonds, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts
- Herbal teas: Green tea, ginger tea, and chamomile
In contrast, foods that are considered acidic or acid-forming include processed foods, red meats, dairy, and refined grains.
3. Alkalizing Supplements
Certain supplements are marketed as having alkalizing properties, which may help balance the body’s pH. These can include:
- Baking soda: A natural compound that may help neutralize excess stomach acid.
- Magnesium and potassium: Both of these minerals help support healthy pH balance.
- Alkaline minerals: These include calcium, cesium, germanium, rubidium, sodium, and chloride in their ionic forms, which can contribute to alkalinity.
Before using supplements, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you have any existing medical conditions.

High pH therapy begins with what you eat. Dietary change is the first and easiest thing that you can do to improve your ph. These charts are a basic guideline for those trying to adjust their diet by eating fewer acidic foods and more alkaline foods.
Diet: You Are What You Eat
Everything we eat affects the health and well-being of our body. Most calls to “change your diet” to improve your health include these recommendations: eat whole, unprocessed foods (raw fruits, raw vegetables, whole grains); drink plenty of clean water (not tap or filtered); and reduce or eliminate intake of refined sugar and flour products, coffee, soft drinks, margarine, commercial cooking oils, dairy and other animal products. In processed foods, heat destroys some of the nutrient value, including destroying enzymes and reducing vitamin and antioxidant content.
Limit Your Sugar Intake
High dietary sugar intake has been linked to increases in both pancreatic and colon cancer. Cancer cells metabolize through fermentation — a process in which glucose is used as a fuel for these abnormal cells in the absence of the oxygen that a normal cell needs.
Aspartame: Sweet Poison
Aspartame is one of the most controversial food additive in history. Aspartame has been shown to readily breakdown into toxic byproducts (phenylalanine, methanol, formaldehyde) when ingested. Adverse health effects have come to light after years of research and the proliferation of artificial sweeteners in food products.
SCIENTIFIC STUDY
Milk Does Not Do a Body Good
The modern dairy industry has introduced bovine growth hormones, antibiotics and other toxins into the milk supply. A scientific study has shown that the level of a very powerful hormone contained in milk, insulin-like growth factor-I, increases in the human body after milk consumption. Increased dietary intake of milk and dairy products have been linked to breast, ovarian and testicular cancers.
Avoid Soy
Soybeans must undergo extensive processing, including chemical extractions and high temperatures, or long fermentation before they suitable for human digestion. Even after such processing, soy can pose a potential health risk. Soy products can contain phytic acid, which blocks the uptake of essential minerals; phytoestrogens, which behave like the hormone estrogen; hemaglutinin, which reduces red blood cells’ ability to carry oxygen; and enzyme inhibitors, which can block the action of enzymes needed for protein digestion.
Whole Foods: Nutrient-Dense Food Choices
Whole foods are foods that have been processed or refined as little as possible before being consumed and are the purest form of nutrition available. An excellent source of complex-carbohydrates – the healthiest form of carbohydrate.
Coconut Oil: The World’s Healthiest Oil
Cold-pressed coconut oil has been called the healthiest oil in the world. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is known for being anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal. Coconut-eating cultures in the tropics have consistently lower cholesterol.
Healthy Hemp Seeds
Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. No other single plant source has the essential amino acids in such an easily digestible form. Hemp seed products are rich in proteins and dietary fiber and are one of the most balanced sources of essenstial fatty acids.
Terminal Hospice Patient Exposes Truth about Ensure “Nutrition” Drinks
“Hospice had the very best of intentions, [but] the stuff they sent over was not real FOOD. In fact, I’m outraged at the idea that they feed this stuff to dying people.” Ensure is…one of the worst examples of a Big Food corporation masquerading as a healthy alternative you’ll ever see. The company has deep ties to the medical industry and as such you can find their products in just about every hospital today, which is bad news for millions of patients who are just trying to get healthier.
4. Breathing Exercises
High pH therapy isn’t just about what you eat or drink. Certain breathing techniques, such as slow, deep breathing, can help regulate the body’s pH levels. By taking in more oxygen and expelling more carbon dioxide, these techniques can help balance acidity levels in the blood, promoting a more alkaline state.
Health Benefits of High pH Therapy
High pH therapy advocates claim that maintaining an alkaline state in the body may offer a variety of health benefits. Though scientific research is still ongoing, some of the potential benefits include:
1. Enhanced Hydration
Drinking alkaline water is believed to help hydrate the body more effectively than regular water. The theory is that alkaline water is absorbed more quickly by the cells, promoting optimal hydration.
2. Improved Digestion
An alkaline diet rich in fruits and vegetables may support healthy digestion by reducing acid reflux and promoting a balanced gut environment. The high fiber content of alkaline foods can also aid digestion and prevent constipation.
3. Increased Energy Levels
Many people who adopt an alkaline lifestyle report feeling more energized. This could be due to the body’s increased efficiency in detoxifying and reducing inflammation. By reducing excess acidity, the body may function better, resulting in improved vitality.
4. Boosted Immune System
An alkaline environment is thought to support immune function. Since chronic acidity can lead to inflammation, which weakens the immune system, maintaining a more alkaline body environment may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
5. Reduced Inflammation
High acidity in the body is often linked to chronic inflammation, which can contribute to various health conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. By promoting alkalinity, high pH therapy may help reduce inflammation and improve overall health.
6. Bone Health
There’s evidence to suggest that a diet high in acidic foods can lead to the leaching of calcium from the bones, potentially contributing to osteoporosis. By increasing alkalinity through diet and water, it’s believed that bone health may improve over time.
How to Get Started with High pH Therapy
If you’re interested in adopting high pH therapy into your daily routine, here are a few simple steps to get started:
- Start Drinking Alkaline Water: Begin incorporating alkaline water into your hydration routine. Many people find that starting with one or two glasses of alkaline water a day can lead to noticeable improvements in hydration and energy levels.
- Increase Your Intake of Alkaline Foods: Focus on adding more fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods to your diet. Aim to fill half of your plate with vegetables at every meal to encourage an alkaline environment.
- Consider Alkaline Supplements: If recommended by a healthcare provider, consider adding magnesium, potassium, or alkaline mineral supplements to your routine to support the body’s natural pH regulation.
- Practice Deep Breathing: Incorporate daily deep breathing exercises to support optimal oxygen levels in the body and enhance pH balance.
- Stay Active: Regular physical activity helps regulate pH balance by supporting healthy circulation and detoxification.
Conclusion: Should You Try High pH Therapy?
While the science behind high pH therapy continues to evolve, many people report positive changes in their health and well-being by adopting a more alkaline lifestyle. Whether you’re looking to boost energy, improve digestion, or reduce inflammation, the principles of high pH therapy could complement a holistic approach to wellness.
As with any new health regimen, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you have underlying medical conditions. By combining high pH therapy with a balanced diet and active lifestyle, you may enhance your health, feel more energized, and improve your quality of life.
