The holidays are a difficult time to maintain an alkaline diet, but with a few simple steps you can make the right choices, not only during this festive season, but throughout the whole year as well.
Limit Intake of Acidic Foods
Acidic foods are foods that create an excess acid load on the body after digestion. These acid-forming foods, like meats, dairy products, and certain grains, are usually high in proteins, which break down into various acidic components when metabolized. Keep in mind that proteins are absolutely necessary for health, especially for muscle function and strength, but too much protein in the diet will contribute to an excessively acidic environment. When eating proteins, always choose the healthiest sources like organic beef and chicken, wild-caught fish, farm-fresh eggs, and plant-based proteins, while avoiding dairy products and gluten-containing grains.
Choose Simple Whole Foods Over Unhealthy Processed Foods
Processed foods are foods that have undergone some kind of manufacturing process to create an end product that is far from natural and fresh. Processed foods are mass produced, usually with lots of added sugars and unhealthy fats, and are full of added ingredients which are needed to fortify and stabilize them for a long shelf life. The process of manufacturing strips away the nutrient content, and many times these important vitamins and minerals must then be added back into the final product. Many processed foods are full of “empty” calories, which leave you feeling unsatisfied and wanting more. Whole foods, on the other hand, have not been altered or modified from their natural whole state. These fresh foods are full of vitamins minerals, and other important nutrients, which are necessary for optimal health.
Say “No” to Sweets
Though sugar itself is pH neutral, it has its own set of detrimental effects on the body when eaten to excess. In addition, most processed or sweetened foods are usually high in acid-forming substances, with little to no redeeming nutritional qualities – yet another reason to avoid sugary foods. Keep in mind that fruits contain sugars as well, but these aren’t “empty” sugars. Fruits contain a wealth of necessary vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Fruits are also full of fiber, which slows down the introduction of sugar into the bloodstream, limiting the unhealthy rush of sugar that can happen with other sweetened foods. Remember, though, that all sugars which the body doesn’t use right away for energy will get converted into fat and stored for later use. Even healthy fruits should be eaten in moderation.
Vegetables, Vegetables, Vegetables
The goal of an alkaline diet is to eat more alkaline foods in order to neutralize the acids being created in your body through normal metabolic processes and acid-forming foods. Vegetables are THE top alkalizing foods. Therefore, if we want to neutralize excess systemic acids we must eat more vegetables every day!
Green Smoothies for the Win
Green smoothies are a great way to get all the right alkalizing foods in your diet every day. Having a nutritious green smoothie as a healthy snack before leaving the house to attend that next party or holiday event will also help reduce appetite and cravings for less healthy foods. Here is an excellent Super Alkaline Green Smoothie that is a perfect way to get an alkaline head start!
Eat, Drink, and Be Alkaline
Planning ahead for the holidays will help you make the best choices everyday in order to stay alkaline throughout the whole season. Make sure to fill your plate with vegetable dishes at family dinners and load up on the fresh fruits and veggies at the next party. If you are going to an event where you know choices will be limited, bring your own snack bag of sliced vegetables, whole fruits and berries, and raw nuts to munch on. And drink that green smoothie before heading out the door!
Of course the acidic or alkaline value of a food isn’t the only determining factor in healthy nutrition. Eating a wide range of whole foods is important for a well-rounded diet. Remember everything in moderation, a little indulgence every once in awhile is okay as long as it doesn’t become a habit. Just make sure to eat plenty of alkaline-forming foods to help neutralize any acids being created in the body by acid-forming foods. Maintaining a healthy diet is all about balance. By being conscious of the healthiness of the foods you eat every day you are taking control of your own health and making the choices that will continue to benefit you for years to come.
Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
